GENERAL INFORMATION
Banks:
Currency in the Cook Islands is the New Zealand Dollar. Our local banks are Westpac, ANZ and BCI. ATMs are situated around the island. Opening hours Monday to Friday 9am-3pm. Westpac also opens 9am to noon on Saturdays.
Shopping:
Monday to Friday 8am-4pm and Saturday 8am – noon. Some shops may vary their hours.
The main market is open from 7am to noon every Saturday. There are a variety of Night markets around the island on different nights.
Electricity:
230v AC – the same as Australia and New Zealand. European and American devices will require an adapter.
Communications:
Telecom Cook Islands:
Calls made out of Rarotonga are classed as International calls.
Internet hotspots are located all around the island.
Data cards and prepaid mobile cards can be purchased from Bluesky’s main office.
Postal Service:
Postal and courier services available from the post office in town near the roundabout.
Rental Vehicles:
They are a lot of rental companies on Rarotonga. It is advisable to pre book!
All drivers need a valid license (scooter under 125cc) to drive a scooter on the roads, if you don t have one, you will need to sit this at the Police station in town ($20nzd).
Max speed for cars is 50km/hr and for scooter riders not wearing a helmet it is 40km/hr.
Public Transport:
Buses round both clockwise and anti clockwise around the island on the hour during the day.
Timetables available. there are green taxis on the island.
Party buses are a fun and safe way to get to and from town if you are heading out to experience the night life.
Medical Services:
Doctors and dentists available and there is an hospital in Rarotonga (west side,Arorangi village).
